Michael David Quillen PE, former Director of Engineering for the City of Clearwater, passed away on New Years Day, Jan. 1, 2023. He was 69. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Michael was born on March 27, 1953 in Logansport, IN to Dr. Robert and Betty Quillen. He attended Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and finished his Engineering degree from Purdue University in 1977. He moved to St. Augustine, FL in 1983 where he practiced engineering for Tim Gabriel and Assoc. and later became a principle of Quillen, Mills, and Brody. He went on to the City of Clearwater for 25 years, 17 years as Director of Engineering. During his tenure he spearheaded many projects including the Memorial Causeway Bridge (2005). Michael retired in 2017. He and Sonja Danielson Cordray married in 1986. Together, they raised their blended family of four daughters. Their home sits on a beautiful pond where they fish with the grandchildren and enjoy the birds and wildlife. Family and friends will remember his soft spoken intelligence, his quick wit, and his passion for board games and classic rock. Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Betty; his stepmother, Ann; and two brothers, Fred and Brett. He is survived by his wife, Sonja; their four daughters and two sons-in-law, Ange, Amy (Daniel), Kaili, and Nicole (Hal); his sister, Marla, and brother, Pat. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He had 25 years of service to the city, he loved his people. A celebration of life will be held at a future date.
I recently hear of Mike's passing while trying to reconnect with him. A good friend that will be missed. My condolences to his family.
